I didn’t set out to build an app.

A friend told me people in her niche hate marketing. Most of what they send out comes straight from vendors. The problem is obvious — those emails all sound the same and don’t sound like the person sending them.

That stuck with me.

I kept asking the same question. What if you could take that generic vendor content and turn it into something that sounded like you, without having to write it from scratch?

Where this started

I opened a chat and, using WisprFlow, talked out the idea exactly as it was in my head. No structure. No cleanup first. It was a rambling mess.

The AI didn’t make it more complex. It did the opposite. It kept asking me to narrow the scope and focus on one outcome instead of trying to solve everything at once.

The idea shifted fast. From “some kind of marketing tool” to something much smaller. Paste vendor content, get a draft email back that sounds like you.

This felt doable instead of overwhelming.

Granted, this can be done by simply pasting the generic content into a prompt and asking for it to be rewritten in one’s voice. But that’s not the point here. This is practice so I can see how to build with code on a local host.

What I’m building right now

I’m keeping the scope tight on purpose.

The flow is simple. You paste vendor content. You describe the tone you want. You click a button. You get a draft email you can use. No login. No saved data. No extra features yet.

That wasn’t an accident. Every time I thought about adding something, I pulled it back and asked what the smallest useful version could be.

That question has been doing most of the work.

The part I thought would slow me down

I expected the technical side to be the sticking point. Mostly because I don’t come from a development background.

What’s happening instead is I’m learning just enough to move forward. I’m not trying to understand everything at once. I’m asking very specific questions, getting an answer, applying it, and moving to the next step.

When something breaks, I paste the error into the chat and ask what it means. That alone has made this feel way more accessible than I expected.

If you’re wondering if you could do this

The short answer is yes, but not by trying to figure it all out upfront.

What’s working for me is starting with a small idea and letting the process unfold one step at a time. I’m not building a full product. I’m testing a simple use case and seeing where it leads.

What I didn’t expect

Two things have stood out.

First, I had to get a basic sense of how things connect. Frontend. Backend. API. I’d heard these words before. Now I’m seeing how they relate to each other in a real project.

Second, I’ve had to get comfortable moving forward without full clarity. There are moments where I don’t fully understand what I’m doing, and I keep going anyway because I know the next step is enough.

That shift has been bigger than anything technical.

Where I’m stuck right now

I’ve got pieces working, but they’re not fully connected yet. The backend can generate the email. The interface is there. But getting them to talk to each other has been the challenge.

The issue is something called a CORS error. Basically, the browser is blocking the connection between the two parts of the app.

I haven’t solved that yet, and I’m okay with that.

The bigger takeaway is I’ve gone from a rough idea to something that’s partially working. I can see how the rest will come together.

One simple action you can take

If you want to try this yourself, start with one small idea and open a chat.

Write something like: “I have a rough idea for a simple tool. Help me turn it into the smallest version I can test. Ask me questions to clarify it.”

Then follow the questions and resist the urge to make it bigger.

That’s how this started for me, with the help of , who is guiding me on this new path.

What matters next

Building it is one part. What matters more is whether someone would use it.

My next step is to show this to a few people and see how they respond. I want to see what makes sense to them, what doesn’t, and where they hesitate.

That’s the part that will shape what happens next.

I had one of those moments this week where something clicked. I wasn’t trying to write a post or plan content. I was talking with about how she’s been teaching herself to code and build AI-powered tools to support her clients.

I was surprised because Ellen is not a coder, and what I saw looked fantastic and worked well. I wanted to learn exactly what she was doing: learning how to build with ChatGPT and Claude on her computer instead of using one of the popular vibe coding tools, like Loveable.

In another conversation with a longtime colleague, I learned about some of the challenges travel agents face in marketing and using AI.

I had an idea: to create a solution for travel agents struggling with content marketing. More on that later when I get things sorted out.

I sat there for a minute because it felt different from the kind of work I usually do. For years, I’ve focused on showing up through writing, emails, and consistent content.

This time, I found myself thinking about something else.

What kind of plug-and-play tool could I create for a niche audience?

I’m starting to see how simple AI tools can emerge from the work we’re already doing.

Why this matters

Most of us spend a lot of time creating content and putting it out into the world. It gets read, maybe saved, and then people move on to the next thing.

When something is useful in a practical way, it tends to stay in someone’s workflow longer. They come back to it, use it again, and it becomes part of how they get things done.

That creates a different kind of connection and trust. It builds over time through use, not just through visibility in a feed or inbox.

What I’m testing with simple AI tools

Right now, I’m keeping this as simple as possible. One input and one output, without adding extra layers.

I’m following Ellen’s lead and using two custom GPTS to flesh out my idea and then figure out the Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

Working this way keeps the attention on whether the result is helpful. If it saves time or makes something easier, that’s a signal to keep going.

The question that usually comes up

When people hear this, the next thought is often about building tools or apps. That can feel like a big leap, especially if it’s new territory.

What I’m finding is that the first step happens before any building. You can explore this by working with what you already have and seeing how far you can take it.

A single prompt can take you further than you expect.

What this could look like for you

Think about your normal week and the kind of work you already do. There are usually a few places where things repeat or take longer than you’d like.

That’s where this idea starts to take shape. You’re looking for something you can simplify or make easier to complete.

It might be turning a process into a checklist, shaping a common question into a template, or taking rough input and turning it into something ready to send. Sounds like basic AI use, and it’s where your thinking starts.

Try this

This is the first step in turning your work into a simple AI tool.

Instead of asking AI for a one-time result, build something you can reuse.

Take a task you’ve done more than once. Something you’ve written at least three times.

Use this prompt:

I’m going to give you an example of something I’ve written more than once.
First, identify the pattern in how this is structured.
Then create a reusable template.
Finally, give me a prompt I can use in the future to generate this type of content in my voice.

Paste in something real. An email, a client response, or a piece of content you’ve rewritten before.

What you’re looking for is the structure, the template, and the prompt that recreates it.

Save the template and prompt. If you use it twice, you’re already thinking like someone who builds tools.

What I’m noticing

As I work through this, I keep coming back to the same idea. The value shows up when something fits into how people already work.

Content still plays a role, but usefulness adds another layer that keeps people engaged over time. It becomes part of their process instead of something they scroll past.

An example is CarouselBot, a valuable tool built by . I avoided creating carousels for LinkedIn and Instagram. Karen built a tool with AI that’s useful for content marketers and makes attractive carousels a snap to create, not a drag. Now I create carousels for nearly every article I publish.

That changes how visibility builds.

Let me ask you something.

Have you ever sat down to work on your marketing and thought, “Why does this feel more complicated than it should?”

You’re experienced. You have ideas. You have the tools. Yet the whole thing still feels harder than it should.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been writing about consolidation. Each article looked at one place where marketing becomes more complicated than it needs to be.

Today I want to pause for a minute and look back at where we’ve been so far.

When you’re hiking up a mountain, there’s always a moment where you stop and look back down the trail. Not because you’re finished, but because it helps to see how far you’ve already come.

That’s what we’re doing here.

If you’re wearing all the hats, some of this will probably sound familiar.

Your marketing can start to feel like a browser with fifty tabs open. Even the ones you’re not using still pull attention and energy in the background.

When enough tabs stay open, everything slows down.

Why Does Marketing Start to Feel Complicated?

Marketing usually starts to feel complicated when too many platforms, ideas, and unfinished decisions compete for your attention.

Many people assume channel confusion means they need better strategy.

What I see more often is a decision problem.

A little LinkedIn. A little email. A little video. A few experiments on new platforms.

None of them stays active long enough to start working.

One clear channel and one steady rhythm usually works better than five half-active ones.

The 90-Day Decision Lock

One question I hear often is this.

“What if I pick the wrong platform?”

I understand the concern. Nobody wants to spend months in the wrong place.

But the bigger problem I see is switching too soon. When direction changes every few weeks, nothing has time to start working.

That is why I suggest a 90-day decision lock (or at least 30 days). Pick one main platform and one simple cadence. For the next one to three months, that decision stays closed.

No weekly debate.

Repurposing as a System

Another theme in this series has been repurposing.

Many people think repurposing means coming up with new ideas all the time. That makes it feel like more work.

I look at it differently.

You already did the thinking when you wrote the article. The rest is translation. The same idea becomes a short video, a simple graphic, or a few posts in other places.

Once the sequence is defined, the work becomes mechanical instead of creative.

The Cost of Endless Tweaking

Let me ask another question.

Do you have something in your business that has been “almost finished” for months?

A sales page. Your About page. An offer description.

Many solopreneurs stay in what I call “make-do mode.” The asset keeps getting revised but is never marked as done.

At some point, you set a rule. This page is done for the next 90 days.

Then your energy moves from polishing to promotion.

Advice Drift

One more pattern I see all the time.

You read a smart article. You hear a podcast. Someone suggests a new tactic.

None of the advice is bad. The problem is reacting to every piece of it.

Your direction shifts a little each week.

One simple filter helps here. Choose one metric for the next 30 days. Revenue from one offer. Newsletter subscribers. Consultation calls.

If a new idea does not support that goal, write it down and revisit it later.

One Small Action

Before you close this post, try this.

Write down every platform or marketing activity you feel responsible for right now.

Now circle the one that brings the most visibility or clients.

For the next 90 days, that becomes your priority.

Everything else goes on a “consider later” list.

When every smart idea turns into a task, your business becomes a renovation project that never finishes. You stay in refinement mode instead of forward motion.

🙋🏻‍♀️I’m not exempt from this. Over the years, I frequently consumed excellent thinking from mentors, colleagues, webinars, books, you name it. Every framework made sense. I kept revisiting drafts that were already solid and reworking offers that were functioning. Each change felt reasonable.

Collectively, they slowed momentum.

The Real Cost

The cost showed up in scattered focus and constant recalibration. I wasn’t off track. I just wasn’t steady.

This is where Greg McKeown’s book Essentialism is helpful. The core idea is simple: decide what matters, then remove what doesn’t. The discipline is about choosing less.

Set a 30-Day Focus

Here’s one small action you can take today.

Open a note and write one sentence:

For the next 30 days, I am optimizing for ______.

Revenue from one offer. Weekly publishing. Growing my email list by 50 subscribers. Choose one.

Then keep that sentence visible when you consume content this week.

Notice what advice supports that line.

Notice what tries to expand it.

Sit with that sentence. See how often your direction gets adjusted midweek. That tension is the open loop.

This week’s decision is simple:

You read the output. You scan the first paragraph. You feel that small pause.

It’s usable. But it needs work.

So you start adjusting sentences. Tightening phrases. Adding depth. Fixing tone. What was supposed to save time turns into a polishing session.

The C.L.E.A.R. model builds a spine into the draft.

That internal sequencing is what reduces the editing cycle.

Over time, the consistency compounds. Posts feel more intentional. Emails feel tighter. Social updates feel considered rather than reactive.

Imagine training for a race where the course is mapped, but the finish line isn’t clearly marked. You know the end is somewhere ahead, but you don’t know where to stop. So you keep moving, scanning for a signal.

We have officially entered the era of the “lifeless inbox.” You know the smell of it: an email arrives that is grammatically perfect, structurally sound, and entirely devoid of a soul. In the early days of the generative explosion, we were intoxicated by speed. Today, that novelty has curdled into “AI fatigue.” Your audience has developed a sixth sense for the assembly-line output of a “polished” prompt, and they are clicking away in droves.

For the past 151 consecutive weeks, the AI Success Club has been a laboratory for this exact friction. These two get lumped together, and they’re not the same. I used to use the words interchangeably, and maybe you do too. So here’s a refresher:

Republishing is when you take the same content and publish it elsewhere with minimal changes. Same article. Same structure. Same intent. New location.

That can be fine. But it doesn’t solve the real problem most solo business owners have.

Repurposing is when one core idea gets reshaped to work on different platforms, for different attention spans, and for different moments of intent.

Repurposing is translation. The idea stays the same, but the format changes so it works in a different place.

Same thinking. Different delivery.

That distinction matters more than most people realize.

Why Republishing Alone Breaks Down

Republishing assumes all platforms behave the same way. They don’t.

A long-form article works because someone chose to sit with it. A short video works because it explains one idea fast. A PDF works because it’s reference-friendly. An infographic works because it reduces scanning time.

When you republish without reshaping, you’re asking each platform to behave like the original. That’s where friction creeps in.

More edits.
More second-guessing.
More “I’ll fix this later.”

Which brings us to why I use a system instead of handling this ad hoc. I admit that for a long time, I kept all of this in my head. I’ve been evangelizing about repurposing content since about 2007 or 2008. I did it so much, I didn’t need to write it down. That worked for a while. Until it didn’t.

Platforms change. Priorities get refined. Businesses evolve, and what you want to do and the energy you have to do it matter.

When I started publishing Your Visibility Edge in September 2024, I decided to be more methodical about my schedule, my writing, and where and how I shared it.

Why I Repurpose My Substack Articles

Repurposing isn’t about reach for me. It’s about containment (OK, it’s about getting more reach and engagement, too).

One article becomes the decision anchor for the week. Everything else supports that decision instead of competing with it.

That means I’m not waking up asking:
“What should I post today?”
or
“Should I be doing more here?”

The work is already decided. I’m moving it through a defined path.

Where Consolidation Fits In

Consolidation shows up here in two ways.

First, I consolidate thinking. One article. One point of view. One core argument.

Second, I consolidate effort. I don’t reinvent the message. I translate it.

That translation happens in a fixed order. No guessing. Usually, no optional steps.

Once the article is done, the rest is mechanical.

My Article Repurposing Flow

Here’s the high-level flow I use after an article is published.

I’m not doing all of this at once. I’m moving it through a sequence so nothing stays open in my head, and I track it all in a spreadsheet.

1. Create a PDF version of the article for easy reference and sharing (because I often have a paywall of content exclusively for paid subscribers, I do this right before I queue for publishing, so I get all the content on the PDF).

2. Save it to the article folder (I have a folder for every single article I publish, sorted by year, with the publish date in the document title; all new assets are added to the folder)

3. Add the PDF to NotebookLM with the publication date and title

4. Create a simple infographic version for scanning

5. Record a short explainer video based on the article (for YouTube)

6. Use the article and PDF inside a new project chat to generate an AI SEO short-form version from a fixed template

7. Copy and paste the adapted article version into my blog (here’s an example)

8. Add images if they serve the content

9. Link back to the original article on Substack

10. Run the article through a saved prompt to generate social posts and Substack Notes

11. Queue social content and close the loop

None of these steps requires new ideas. They only require follow-through.

That’s the whole point.

What This System Prevents

This system exists to stop a few very specific problems.

• It prevents content from living only in one place.

• It prevents half-finished assets from piling up.

• It prevents constant re-deciding.

And most importantly, it prevents me from treating visibility as a daily creative burden instead of a repeatable process.

Make It Stick

Write down:

• Where it already lives (Substack, your blog, another newsletter platform)

• One format it could become without rethinking the idea

• One place you’ll link back to the original

Why unfinished drafts keep pulling at your attention

This isn’t about being scattered. It’s about having range.

When you’ve been creating content for a while, you don’t just have ideas. You can see how one idea could work as a post, an article, a note, a video, or an email. So instead of choosing, you keep it flexible.

Flexibility feels useful in the moment. Over time, it becomes a drain.

Every time you open a notebook or a document, you’re reopening decisions you never closed. The mental load doesn’t come from writing. It comes from repeatedly deciding where something belongs.

How this connects to the last two articles

First, you reduced where your visibility lives, which lowered the number of incoming ideas. Next, you chose a cadence, which limited how often ideas could pile up.

And yet the drafts are still there.

That’s because the format question is still open. Ideas keep moving because nothing has told them where they are allowed to land.

I’m seeing the same pattern across conversations with solo business owners. It’s not that visibility isn’t working. Its effort is spread thin across too much surface area, so nothing ever quite settles.

That question alone changes how you approach visibility, content, and AI. Instead of chasing the next tactic, you start strengthening what already supports you. Instead of collecting more options, you reduce decisions. Instead of trying to keep up, you make space for what matters to stay close.

That’s where real change begins, not with intensity, but with integration.

January will build on this in a practical way. Not about doing more, but about making what you already know easier to use. About turning understanding into steadiness. About the difference between learning something and having it actually support you day to day.

Before we get there, I want to say this plainly.

If you feel a little full right now, that makes sense. You didn’t do anything wrong. You grew, and growth has a way of leaving things scattered before they come together.

How I Stumbled Into My First Business

Most people know me for the work I do now. What they usually don’t know is how it all started. I’ve rarely talked about that chapter because it feels so far away from my life today. But the truth is, everything I teach now was shaped by what happened almost thirty years ago.

So this is the beginning. It’s the part of my life that set the path for every business I’ve built since.1

The Leap I Never Saw Coming

In 1996, I was 37, living in Los Angeles, and had a job that felt like a placeholder until a better opportunity came along. I wasn’t unhappy. I wasn’t lost. I was just bored. I knew I wasn’t growing, and there wasn’t anything ahead of me that felt exciting.

Then two things happened at the same time.

I fell in love, and an unexpected door opened.

My boyfriend owned a remote farm in rural Ontario, Canada. We were both in big transitions and talking about what we wanted next. R. had the idea of starting a business coaching practice together. It made no sense. I had just bought a condo in Los Angeles. I had a solid job with benefits. I had a life I understood.

And I walked away from all of it.

I made a life-changing decision without thinking it through. I moved to a hundred-acre farm in the middle of nowhere with a few hundred dollars in savings and the belief that “we’ll figure it out” would be enough.

No Plan, No Money, and a Very Long Winter

When I say we had nothing, I mean nothing.
No niche.
No market research.
No idea if business coaching was even a thing in Canada.
No services mapped out.
No safety net.

We weren’t naive. OK, maybe we were, and we were caught up in the excitement of doing something bold. Looking back, I can see how reckless it was. But I can also see how it shaped the rest of my life.

We arrived in Canada in the Fall, and Winter came early that year. I was born and raised in Southern California. That first winter was very long and very cold.

We had one phone line and dial-up internet.

We learned as we went. We learned by trying things that didn’t work and things that surprised us. We learned what people responded to and what they didn’t care about at all. We learned how to build a business because we didn’t have the luxury of waiting until we felt ready. We needed income, so we created offers. We needed clients, so we started talking to people. There wasn’t time to overthink any of it.

That stretch of time taught me things I didn’t have the words for back then. I carried those lessons with me long after the farm, and long after I started over again. Here’s the short version for now. I’ll expand on these in part 2.

We didn’t have a clear plan. We took the first step anyway.

These are the threads I didn’t see until much later, but they shaped every business I built after that one.

The Strange Mix of Fear and Confidence

There’s something complicated about having no backup plan. It’s scary, but it’s also clarifying. There is no drifting when you know you can’t rely on anything else. We didn’t have a Plan B, so we kept moving forward.

At the same time, I carried a confidence that steadied me through all of it. I knew if everything collapsed, I could go back home, get another job, and start again. That doesn’t sound like much, but that mix of fear and self-belief held me together. It pushed me through long days, long, cold winters, and the reality of trying to educate a market where the only coaching anyone recognized involved a hockey stick.

Against the odds, over about 6 years, we built a six-figure practice. It wasn’t smooth or simple, but it worked.

The Ending I Didn’t Expect

The business grew, but the marriage didn’t survive. When I eventually returned to Los Angeles, I came home with more than heartbreak and a stack of lessons. I came home with a new sense of myself.

During four years on the farm and two years in Ottawa, I learned how to build a website, create an email list, talk about what I offer, and run a business with my own hands. Every skill I leaned on in the years that followed started there, in that cold farmhouse, trying to figure out how to make a business work.

The story didn’t end the way I imagined, but it set up everything that came next. I didn’t know it then, but that first business was the training ground for the work I do now.

A Different Version of Me

Before Canada, I was comfortable letting other people take the lead. I was happy being the person behind the scenes. I didn’t see myself as someone who could build something from scratch.

By the time I came home, that had changed. I knew I could create something on my own. I knew I didn’t have to wait for someone else’s plan or permission. I had already done the hard thing once, and that shifted something deep inside me.

That change has stayed with me ever since.

Why I’m Sharing This Now

I’ve held this story close for a long time. Maybe because it feels personal. Maybe because it was messy. Maybe because it didn’t follow a clean arc, but this chapter explains a lot about how I work and why I teach the way I do.

Part 2 will walk through the connection between this early chapter and your own visibility, your confidence, and the way you build or rebuild your business today. The tools have changed, but the fundamentals haven’t.
